Arts Centre Melbourne (ACM) is seeking expressions of interests from Masters of Cultural Materials Conservation 2nd year paintings, objects and paper students to volunteer for a visual arts condition audit project.
Background to Project
The Arts Centre Melbourne (ACM) will undergo major redevelopment as a part of Melbourne’s Arts Precinct in Southbank project announced by the State Government earlier this year https://creative.vic.gov.au/about/key-initiatives/melbourne-arts-precinct
The Theatres Building located at 100 St Kilda Road, Southbank; otherwise recognised as the ‘Spire’ building, houses the majority of Arts Centre Melbourne’s Public Art Collection comprising of paintings, sculpture, and works on paper. Many of the artworks were specifically commissioned for the building’s opening in the early 1980’s and represent significant Australian artists from this period. The theatre foyers, administrative spaces and external surrounds of this building will be reimagined in the near future and will undergo various stages of redevelopment necessitating the temporary relocation of all of the artworks.
This project involves condition reporting of all the internal and external artworks within and surrounding the spire building prior to relocation (approx. 800 works). Condition reporting will require the volunteers to undertake on-site assessment of the artworks, preparation of written documentation of condition, ‘marking up’ of images detailing condition and recording the current display and storage conditions.
The volunteers will receive site induction and training in documentation techniques and equipment specific to this project. Throughout the project the volunteers will be supervised by either a Conservator or a Collection Registrar.
Project timeframe and required commitment
The project will take place over a few months commencing the week of 3rd of December 2018. It is proposed that volunteers will work in pairs for the duration of the project. A time commitment of 2 days per week will be required with the hours and days being negotiable.
The preference is for students to undertake condition reporting of the artworks within their area of specialisation (objects, paintings and paper) and that students have completed the first year of their Masters course.
Expressions of interest
Interested students are asked to submit a letter detailing their interest in the project, highlighting any past experience along with potential availability. A very brief CV with the details of 2 referees is also required.
