About the Position

Arts Centre Melbourne is seeking an experienced Senior Technician, Lighting to join our Production team.

This role provides advanced technical lighting support across productions and events, working closely with Lighting Supervisors and presenters to deliver safe, consistent, and high-quality outcomes. The position plays a key role in pre-production, bump-ins, rehearsals, performances, and bump-outs, applying expertise in lighting consoles, follow-spot operation, and general lighting systems.

The Senior Technician also contributes to the coordination and mentorship of lighting staff while maintaining operational consistency across ACM’s multi-venue environment.

Variable time B ongoing position - approx. 25 hours per week. Band 2.3 $73,213.00 p.a. (pro-rata) plus superannuation.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Delivery & Operations

• Provide advanced lighting support across all stages of production, including pre-production, rehearsals, performances, and bump-outs
• Operate lighting systems including consoles, theatrical lighting, and follow-spots to deliver presenter requirements
• Participate in cueing, programming, and real-time problem solving during live performances
• Plan, write, and modify cue sheets, adapting to changes in live environments

Collaboration & Stakeholder Support

• Work closely with presenters, hirers, and internal teams to deliver high-quality production outcomes
• Provide technical advice, guidance, and support to presenters and stakeholders
• Collaborate across multiple venues to ensure consistent delivery standards

Leadership & Team Contribution

• Support coordination and mentorship of lighting staff
• Contribute to a positive, collaborative team environment
• Assist in maintaining high standards of service and presentation

Safety & Compliance

• Ensure adherence to Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) procedures across all activities
• Contribute to Safe Work Method Statements and risk assessments
• Report and address faulty equipment to minimise risk

Continuous Improvement

• Provide input into lighting technology, equipment selection, and system upgrades
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry practices and innovations

Your Skills and Experience

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in professional theatre, concert, or live production environments
• Demonstrated proficiency in ETC Eos and/or GrandMA console programming and operation
• Proven experience operating follow-spots for live performance
• Advanced knowledge of lighting systems, control networks, and production workflows
• Strong understanding of venue operations within a multi-venue environment
• Ability to lead, mentor, and support team members
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills with presenters and stakeholders
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise competing demands
• Commitment to safe work practices and OH&S compliance
• Willingness to continuously develop technical skills

Desired Qualifications & Certifications

Highly regarded but not essential:

• Relevant trade qualification, diploma, or degree in technical production or similar
• High Risk Work Licences (e.g. Dogman, Rigging, EWP, Forklift)
• White Card (Construction Induction)
• Work Safely at Heights certification
• Fire Emergency Warden training
• Test & Tag certification 
• Familiarity with in-house lighting equipment and systems
